Title: Natural Inspiration – Wattle
Date: 02/September/2025 – 5/November/2025
Venue: The Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne, Level 25, 570 Bourke Street, Melbourne
Descriptions:
Melbourne-based weaver, Yoko Kawabata, creates inspirational pieces using a free-style weaving technique on Japanese weaving looms.
Powered by hand rather than electricity, creating handwoven textile is to accept a slower pace. Using traditional craft skills to make textile artwork that draw on and respect the balance of nature, Yoko derives inspiration from the world’s colourful beauty as embodied by flowers, birds, oceans, sunlight and rainbows.
By using natural fibres, Yoko’s visually striking pieces experiment with a time-honoured craft to push beyond traditional weaving boundaries. Yoko’s Weaving Art is an uplifting journey into the rich tapestry of Japanese weaving techniques and a celebration of sustainability.
